We just LOVE cooking over the campfire. Growing up we camped ALOT… like in-a-tent-cooking-over-a-fire-camping. Our family has developed several campfire recipe specialties! This summer during our family time I documented many of our favorites and today I get to share them with you! Most of the recipes are simple, but take just a bit of prep before you go to get things set up.

If you like to cook while camping check out my other post on Pie Iron Camping recipes.

This first one was a hit with my kids…

We haven’t camped as a family for awhile, but every summer we cook a big campfire breakfast. This first one is my personal favorite…

Spider hot dogs: Take your hot dogs and cut them so each end has four parts. You want to leave the middle solid so you can put the skewer there.

I was able to cook two at a time over the fire. As the hot dog cooks the ends curl up and get crispy..

The Egg and Cheese Breakfast {or anytime of day} Sandwich is tasty and actually really healthy. You need a long handled pie cookerCampfire Cooking {recipes} - Life Sew Savory (12), an egg, slice of your favorite cheese, tho slices of bread and some butter (or substitute). Grease one side of the pie cookerCampfire Cooking {recipes} - Life Sew Savory (13) and cook the egg over the fire.

then prep the rest of the sandwich. Spread a generous layer of the butter on the OUTSIDE of the sandwich to prevent sticking to the cooker.

place the sandwich in the cooker and place in campfire. Hot Coals work the best for cooking. Cook on both sides, check and continue if needed.

The Fruit Pie is similar. You need butter, two slices of bread, and the pie filling of your choice. You can also use Simply Fruit Jam instead for a healthier version. Butter the outside of one side of bread, place in cooker, add filling. Butter the other piece and put together. Cook the same as the egg sandwich.

Our cinnamon orange rolls are the family favorite. We’ve been making these for several years, but didn’t grow up with this recipe. The rolls pick up the flavor of the orange and they are GOOD! The prep for this involves scooping out the middle of lots of oranges. I do this before we leave for camping and then use the insides for smoothies when we come home.

I’ve used both regular shaped rolls and these new cinnamon “bites” that I found. The regular ones tend to ooze out the side of the orange and burn easier. If you buy the BIG oranges you can fit a regular roll inside. I was making 15 this summer and was too cheap to get the big oranges.

Wrap the orange in heavy duty foil and place on a grate above the flames. If you have nice coals, you can place directly in the fire. Turn often. Usually they look like this:

But occasionally this is what happens.. The outside is burnt, but the inside of the roll is still VERY good, so don’t throw it all away…

The Reese’s S’More consists of making a s’more as usual, but replacing the Hersheys with 1 or 2 mini Reese’s…. it is delightful!
