Navigating the DSSSB Process: A Roadmap to Becoming a Teacher in IndiaTeaching is not just a profession; it's a calling that empowers and shapes the future. For those aspiring to become educators in India, the DSSSB (Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board) process stands as a crucial gateway to fulfilling this noble endeavor.Understanding DSSSBDSSSB is a key recruitment body in Delhi, tasked with selecting qualified individuals for various posts in government schools, including PGT (Post Graduate Teacher), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher), and PRT (Primary Teacher). The process is designed to identify candidates with the right blend of academic qualifications, teaching aptitude, and passion for shaping young minds.Eligibility CriteriaTo embark on this journey, aspiring teachers must meet specific eligibility criteria set by DSSSB. A bachelor's degree in education (B.Ed.) is a common requirement for TGT and PGT positions. Additionally, candidates need to clear the DSSSB examination, which includes a written test and, in some cases, an interview or skill test.Application and RegistrationThe first step in the DSSSB process is to stay alert for official notifications announcing vacancies. Once the notification is released, candidates can submit their applications online through the official DSSSB website. Careful attention to the application process, including providing accurate information and necessary documentation, is crucial.Written ExaminationThe heart of the DSSSB process lies in the written examination. Tailored to assess the candidate's knowledge, subject expertise, and teaching skills, the examination is a comprehensive evaluation. Successful performance in this stage is pivotal to advancing further in the selection process.Interview or Skill TestDepending on the position, candidates may undergo an interview or a skill test. The interview assesses their communication skills, subject knowledge, and overall suitability for the teaching role. The skill test may involve practical teaching demonstrations or other relevant tasks.Merit List and AppointmentBased on the collective performance in written exams and interviews, DSSSB compiles a merit list. Successful candidates are then appointed to vacant teaching positions in Delhi government schools.Preparation StrategiesEffective preparation is the key to success in the DSSSB process. Aspiring teachers should develop a comprehensive study plan, focus on strengthening subject knowledge, and practice with previous question papers. Coaching institutes and self-study resources can be valuable allies in the preparation journey.Becoming a teacher through the DSSSB process is not just a career choice; it's a commitment to shaping the minds of future generations. With dedication, thorough preparation, and a genuine passion for teaching, aspiring educators can navigate the DSSSB process and contribute significantly to the educational landscape of India.

Musings on Experimentation, Randomized Controlled Studies and Educational Research/Scholarship of Teaching and LearningIn a previous post, I had written about the spectrum of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Educational Research. A common misconception especially amongst those who come from a strong science background is to always use Randomized Controlled Studies (RCTs) as a gold standard, and to compare traditional teaching with a new intervention/new form of teaching. The choice of whether we use the term SOTL or Educational Research, and whether we use RCTs depends on the context and the research question. RCTs can be useful in contexts of hypothesis testing and where we can strictly control the contexts/variables. However, this is not the case in education where it is also about studying in the natural context. To me, there is "no one size fits all" solution. The general guideline is if we have enough sample size, and most importantly, if we can strictly define the experimental set up, we can choose RCTs. However, if we cannot control the ecosystem and variables, then RCTs may not be the best choice. We should also move away from comparative studies of lecturing versus student-centric methods to understanding how to improve each method. It has been long established that lecturing has its place and so does student-centric teaching methods. The decision for the choice of teaching method is not just educational but also economical. And we know that a blend is what is practical and what is going to work. So what is the right blend for a given context? We should also move away from student satisfaction evaluations. The data has to be triangulated with multiple perspectives. Only when multiple factors such as that the students are engaged and learning, and the teachers are managing well, can the system said to be truly effective. Not just when one group says they "like or dislike" a certain method. We need to drill down to consider multiple perspectives on multiple aspects to take a holistic view. So what can be other interesting areas of research in teaching and learning?Understanding the reasons for why a certain method work is more of the basic science research, and understanding how to make an educational intervention work is more of application research. And often, we combine both. So even before getting onto the the type of research question and method, we need to be clear if we are going to be pursuing a fundamental research or an application based research. The scope of work is infinite. To start with, the fundamentals of educational learning theory only has few variations to date: Behaviourist, Cognitive and Constructivist/Socio-constructivist. We now see unprecedented changes in use of technology tools (e.g., Generative AIs that can aid our learning). Do these learning theories still hold in today's age and time? What is the "new age" learning theory in today's digital world?

Call for papers!During the last decade, a growing number of studies in vocational didactics have been carried out (Aakre, 2022; Fejes et al., 2017; Gessler & Herrera, 2015; Haaland & Nilsen, 2023; Hansen, 2017; Herrera & Gessler, 2018; Muhrman, 2020; Pahl, 2014). They all show an interest in studying vocational teaching and vocational learning in various vocational educations. The concept of vocational didactics can be seen as planning and facilitating, implementing assessing, and critically analyzing the profession-specific learning processes in schools and workplaces. Here, the students’ work with relevant vocational tasks is central (Hiim & Hippe, 2001).In line with technological development and societal change, there is a need for updating the vocational didactic research field. This call for papers enables us to deepen the concept of vocational didactics in a Nordic context via peer-reviewed articles in a scientific journal such as the Scandinavian Journal of Vocations in Development (SJVD).Since the concept of vocational didactics is ambiguous, we need to explore the concept. In addition, there are several university courses within vocational didactics at advanced levels where the concept is used. Therefore, a clarification regarding the complexity of the concept of vocational didactic is necessary. This special issue aims to develop knowledge about the concept with a deeper focus onteaching and/or learning in school- and workplace-integrated environments, in digitized society and profession (for example artificial intelligence), in vocational competence, with materials and artifacts, with governing documents as well as in professionalism. The special edition will contribute to the research field of vocational didactics in Scandinavian languages and English.Hamid Asghari and Anna Öhman, Karlstad University, will serve as guest editors in collaboration with the editorial team for the Scandinavian Journal of Vocations in Development (SJVD). Through this open call, we invite you to submit abstracts regarding research on vocational didactics to this journal. The abstract must be written in a Scandinavian language or English. The abstract must contain a maximum of 800 words, excluding references, and describe the problem area being addressed, purpose and possible research questions, as well as theory/method and preliminary results. Please forward your abstract as a separate document via e-mail to Hamid Asghari (hamid.asghari@kau.se). Abstracts considered relevant for this upcoming special issue will be selected in consultation with the journal’s editorial team, and authors will be notified. The final papers will be subject to a double-blind peer review.Timeline:Deadline for abstracts; October 1st2023Confirmation of selected abstracts; November 2023Deadline for submitting complete papers; June 1st2024Publication; Winter/Spring 2025#ottu #amistutkimus #AMKtutkimus
